According to charity Diabetes UK, 3.2 million people in the UK have diabetes, with most of these being cases of type 2 diabetes. This is the type that usually appears in middle age, although more frequently it’s being diagnosed in younger people who are overweight or obese. Indeed, being obese accounts for 80-85 percent of the overall risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a worrying fact, considering around two out of three people in the UK weigh more than is healthy. Losing weight if necessary, eating a balanced diet and taking more exercise, is an essential part of managing diabetes. The Eatwell Guide is a good starting point for finding out more about a healthy diet.
