Around 10 million people in the UK suffer with arthritis, a condition that causes pain, inflammation, tenderness and stiffness in and around the joints. The two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There is some evidence that taking fish oil supplements (which are rich in omega-3 fats) might help to relieve symptoms such as joint pain as stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis. And Arthritis Research UK recommends getting more omega-3 fat in our diet, for example, from oily fish, if we have any form of arthritis. However, more research is needed to see whether eating oily fish may help to protect us from developing the disease in the first place. What we do know is that maintaining a healthy weight (and losing weight if we need to) is one of the most important things we can do to protect ourselves from arthritis and treat the condition, as it reduces the strain on our joints.
