    Question

How much fish do we eat in the UK?

    expert1

    Answer

Here in the UK, we eat a whopping 380,000 tonnes of fish every year. Holy mackerel!

The top ten include salmon, cod, prawns, haddock and tuna

    Question

What is the fat and calorie content in fish?

    expert2

    Answer

All fish and shellfish are relatively low in fat, and even fish ‘n’ chips is lower in fat than many takeaway options, containing 5.3g per 100g compared with 11g in pizza, 12.1g in a burger and medium fries, and an alarming 16.2g in a Doner kebab.*

*Fried, battered cod, with chips and mushy peas (based on an average medium-portion serving of 450g)

    Question

How much fish should I eat?

    expert1

    Answer

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends two 140g portions of seafood per week, one of which should be oil-rich (e.g. mackerel, sardines or herring). Research shows, though, that only 28% of people in the UK eat their weekly recommended two portions. Smoked fish and tinned fish count towards your two portions per week.
